Steve Fulgoni, 29 White Birch
Drive, Dix, Hills 11746, (631)421-8664 as a new member.
The LIWA club President Carl Saenger opened the meeting. Name tags were distributed. An article from a local newspaper about Gordon Thompson turning natural edge locust bowls was circulated. Sandee Larsen was recognized for her contributions to the club. Sandee prepares the refreshments at the beginning of every meeting. We truly appreciate her hard work and willingness to pitch by purchasing the donuts and make the coffee. Many of us could not make it through the meeting without the refreshments.
The Treasurer, Joe DeMaio reports $2,281.99 in the treasury. Please pay your dues if you have not already done so. Make your checks payable to the LIWA in the amount of $25.00.
Carl stated two main objectives of his presidency. He would like to see each member improve his or her turning skills and he would like to see our work displayed in libraries across Long Island. Contact your local library to find out if they would like us to show our work. The library must have a secured area with a locked showcase. We have made displays at Rockville Center, Northport, Huntington, Dix Hills, Port Jefferson, and Seataucket over the past few years.

Doug Ruggiero has made a list of all of the library tapes and books that are available in the library. The club voted $650 to purchase new materials. A committee including Bob Brady, Norm Abrams and Doug will decide what to purchase. Call Doug if you have a specific book or tape you would like for the library.
Marty Mandelbaum with the help of Ken Deaner, Phil Gray, and Carl Saenger submitted a grant proposal to the A.A.W. prior to the January 15 deadline. The proposal requests funds to purchase several cameras and a monitor to make viewing demonstrations safer and more pleasant. Copies of demonstrations would be made available to the club’s members. The grant also calls for an outreach program for members under 18 years of age to learn to turn. The club voted to accept the proposal and request. We hope to get a grant of approximately$1000. Norm Abrams has agreed to review the club’s insurance policy and make a recommendation. We need to know if we need additional insurance coverage for the club if we begin a teen program. We may need to insure for special events. We may also need to incorporate. Norm will report at the next meeting.
Bob Urso reported on the upcoming Woodworkers Show April 5 and 6. Alan Russo has volunteered to do one of two turning seminars at the show. We need one more volunteer for the second seminar. See Norm Abrams if you can help out. The club will also display its work at the show. We will need a few mini-lathes for the general turning demonstration at the show. We will also need a number of wood blanks. Norm will establish a list of times for our members to volunteers to do general demonstrations on .Saturday and Sunday
Thanks to Jim Diamond for volunteering to conduct a workshop at his home for four novice turners on February 1, 2003.
Phil Gray will be the liaison with the group conducting the upcoming Albany symposium. Call Phil for additional information.
