Arrowmont

By Ken Deaner

Gatlinberg, TN is seven hundred miles form New York and from my urban  perspective is an unlikely place to find a prominent school for arts and craft. My only reference to the school had been Sandee Larsen who spoke to the club about her experience at Arrowmont last year.  She took a week-long turning class, which had been arranged by Elderhostle.

This past October I  contacted Binh Pho, an acclaimed Chicago based turner, to find out if he would be conducting any workshops this year.  He e-mailed me and told me that he would be teaching a course at Arrowmont in March of 2003.  I contacted the school immediately and was told that every slot had been filled but that I could be wait-listed.  I agreed.  Much to my surprise the registrar of the school called me on Friday, February 28   to tell me that a vacancy had opened for the March 17th course.  I rearranged my schedule and made plans to drive to the school.

The school provides week-long classes in a number of disciplines:  turning, woodcarving, stone carving, wearving, fabric dying, jewelery making photography, painting, and more.  Room and board are available.  A one week class is approximately $385 plus a $75 registration fee, plus the cost of room and board.  They have a variety of accommodations both private as well as dorms.  I selected a private room since my wife wanted to come along and turn the time into a two week vacation.  There were some classes that interested her but this time she was happy to tag-along and explore the Smokey Mountain area while I attended classes.

My adventure was about to begin!

We look forward to seeing you at Sports Plus Exhibition Center—Nesconset Hwy (Rte. 347) & New Moriches Rd., Lake Grove, Long Island, NY 10-00 AM– 5:00 PM.

Dues and Member’s List

A member’s list will be distributed at the  April meeting.   A number of members  whose names appear on the list have not yet paid their 2003 dues.  Please speak with Joe DeMaio if you are not sure if your dues are up to date or mail him a check for $25.00.  We will revise the Member’s list over the next few months.  If you have not paid your dues you will no longer be eligible for all of the great benefits the LIWA offers:

·          Newsletter

·          Twelve yearly demonstrations by exceptional turners

·          LIWA lending library books and videos,

·          Wood auctions
